What is Turmeric?

Turmeric is a spice derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant, native to Southeast Asia. It's known for its bright yellow color and distinctive, earthy flavor. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is responsible for its many health benefits. Curcumin is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, making turmeric a staple in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Benefits of Turmeric in Skincare

1. Anti-Inflammatory Properties: Turmeric's anti-inflammatory effects can help calm irritated skin and reduce redness. This makes it an excellent ingredient for those with sensitive skin or conditions like acne and eczema.

2. Antioxidant Powerhouse: The antioxidants in turmeric protect the skin from free radicals, which are harmful molecules that can cause premature aging and damage. Regular use of turmeric in skincare can help maintain a youthful and glowing complexion.

3. Brightening Effect: Turmeric is known for its skin-brightening properties. It can help even out skin tone and reduce the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation, giving your skin a natural, healthy glow.

4. Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Fungal: Turmeric has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help keep your skin clean and clear from infections and breakouts.

5. Healing and Repair: Turmeric promotes the healing of wounds and can help repair damaged skin, making it a great ingredient for post-acne marks and minor cuts.

Turmeric in Food vs. in Skincare

In Food and Drink:

  • Internal Health: When consumed, turmeric aids digestion, boosts immunity, and reduces inflammation throughout the body. It’s a key ingredient in golden milk, teas, and a variety of dishes, providing holistic health benefits.

  • Antioxidant Support: Ingesting turmeric offers internal antioxidant support, combating oxidative stress and promoting overall well-being.

  • Anti-Inflammatory: Regular consumption can help manage chronic inflammation, potentially reducing the risk of various chronic conditions.

In Skincare:

  • Direct Application: Applying turmeric directly to the skin allows for targeted benefits, focusing on specific skin issues such as acne, dark spots, and inflammation.

  • Localized Healing: The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of turmeric can directly soothe and heal skin irritations, reducing redness and preventing breakouts.

  • Visible Results: Topical use of turmeric can result in visible improvements in skin tone and texture, promoting a radiant and youthful appearance.

  • Immediate Impact: Unlike the internal consumption where benefits are distributed throughout the body, topical application of turmeric delivers concentrated benefits right where you need them.

A delicious Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte) recipe:

Ingredients

·       2 cups milk of choice (I prefer almond; but oat, coconut or cow’s milk also work)

·       1 to 3 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, monk fruit or other sweetener of choice

·       1 teaspoon vanilla extract

·       1.5 teaspoons ground turmeric

·       1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

·       1/2 teaspoon ground ginger (optional but awesome)

·       pinch of black pepper (helps make the turmeric more bioavailable) and fine sea salt

Instructions

HOT LATTE:

1.     Steam the milk. Steam the milk until warm and frothy using a frother or heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Keep whisking until its hot and frothy.

2.     Mix until combined. Add sweetener (if using), vanilla extract, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and salt to your favorite mug. Pour the hot milk into the mug and stir until combined.

3.     Add extra sweetener if needed. After tasting add extra sweetener, if needed.

4.     Serve warm. Serve immediately and enjoy!

ICED LATTE:

1.     Dissolve the flavors. Heat 1/2 cup of the milk until almost simmering. In a glass measuring cup, whisk together the hot milk, sweetener, vanilla extract, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper and salt until combined.

2.     Mix until combined. Fill a large glass with ice. Pour in the warm milk mixture. Then pour in the remaining cold milk, and stir briefly with a straw until combined.

3.     Add extra sweetener if needed. After tasting, add extra sweetener, if needed.

4.     Serve cold. Serve immediately and enjoy!
